Weekend Journey through the Past

Saturday, October 13th & Sunday, October 14th, 2007

The Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, in conjunction with local historical organizations, has designated the weekend of October 13-14, 2007, "Weekend Journey through the Past." During the two-day period, twenty-two of the County's significant historic sites will be open at the same time - 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and 12:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday. Many of the sites will offer special exhibits, programs, and tours. Admission and parking are free.

The sites have been grouped into three convenient tours by location: Northern, Central, and Southern Somerset County. A scenic route plan with driving directions has been prepared for each of the three tours.

The Weekend Journey provides the perfect opportunity to take your family on a weekend outing. A visit to the sites will provide a unique educational experience for students, as well as a chance to see some of the Somerset County's most picturesque and unspoiled areas.

Many of the sites have significant Revolutionary War histories and have contributed to the area's designation as the "Crossroads of the American Revolution State Heritage Area". Local historians will be on hand to share their knowledge and stories about Somerset County history. By the end of your Weekend Journey, you will have a better appreciation of the history of the County and the lives of the early settlers - who they were, where they came from, and how they lived.

Photography Contest:

You're invited to share your experience of the "Weekend Journey through the Past" though photographs. As you journey from one participating site to the next, watch for unique shots as if you were creating a travel postcard. Capture subjects that reflect the days' activities, whether visitors, costumed docents, or re-enactors. Look for idyllic settings or unusual lighting that frame the historic structures in a unique way.

Up to three (3) photographs may be submitted per person. Prizes will be awarded for the best photograph in three categories: 1) Teens/Children; 2) Adults; and 3) Professionals. The photographs will be judged by a panel of professional photographers. In addition to the prize winning photographs, a number of other "honorable mention" photographs will be selected for public exhibition prior to next year's annual Weekend Journey through the Past.

Become a History Traveler and Win a Complementary Meal:

Adults who visit five or more of the participating historic sites during this weekend event will be designated “History Travelers” and will qualify for a free drawing. Two prizes will be awarded: a dinner for two or brunch for four at one of Somerset County's fine restaurants.

To participate, pick up a "Wayfarer’s Pass" from the first participating site you visit. Print your contact information on the reverse side. As you travel from site to site, have your pass officially endorsed by an attendant at each site.  Once you have visited your fifth site, drop your Wayfarer’s Pass in the collection box located at each site. The winning History Traveler will be notified within thirty days following the weekend event. Good luck!
